[CANCELLLED] Redaktionsmöte – samling för en kritik av samtiden

Konst och kultur utstår stora påfrestningar i populismens tidevarv. Detta drabbar inte minst samtidskonsten och dess komplexa miljö mellan det lokala, nationella och internationella. När publicistiska rum inskränks till fördel för ideologisk och marknadsdriven kommunikation växer behovet av kritiska samtal i mångfaldiga format och språk. Med största möjliga integritet vill vi skapa nya sätt att förhålla sig till konsten och världen. Hur kan vi förstå konstens, estetikens och hela konstvärldens funktion för den demokratiska nationalstatens framväxt inom en modernitet sammantvinnad med både kolonialism och kapitalism?

Under rubriken ”Redaktionsmöte” arrangerar konsttidskriften Paletten i vår två öppna symposier i Malmö och i Stockholm. I Göteborg samarbetar redaktionsmötet inom ramen för ”För en samtida kritik av konsten”, organiserat av Urban Konst vid Göteborgs Konsthall. Dessa sammankomster syftar inte bara till att presentera och kommentera, utan även till att diskutera, besluta och planera fortsatt arbete. I anslutning till panelsamtal och diskussion är publikens röst därför att vara viktig för det redaktionella arbete som följer på symposiet, då ett antal kritiska texter bearbetas för kommande publikation på Palettens webbsida under hösten 2020. Vad som sker under redaktionsmötet är därmed avgörande för det som sedan publiceras, i termer av prioritet, ämnen och möjliga skribenter.
Det redaktionella samtalet leds av två lokala redaktörer för varje specifikt möte. De kommer även att moderera samtalen och har tillsammans med Paletten bjudit in ett antal talare till symposiet. Tanken är att dessa talare ska katalysera och understödja den diskussion som redaktionsmötet utgör, och som den efterföljande publicering ämnar följa upp. Detta redaktionella material kommer att ingå i en större satsning på Palettens webb, som syftar till att undersöka möjligheterna för konstkritiken idag, i praktiken. Genom att expandera tidskrifternas infrastruktur till en återkommande publikation online, vill vi undersöka metoder och format för konstkritik och därmed etablera perspektiv som inte bara granskar konsten, utan som också bidrar till att förändra förutsättningarna att se på konst. Detta vill vi göra genom att kritiskt granska, i och omkring texten, de materiella förutsättningarna för att se och skriva om konst. Går det att likt arbetarkonstens socio-ekonomiskt kontextkritiska metoder ställa samma fråga till texten, det vill säga: vilken infrastruktur upprätthåller, förändrar eller skapar författaren med sin text, och hur hör detta samman med det sociala mötet med konsten själv? Vi vill vidga fältets språk och metoder. Så blir det som omskrivs lika angeläget som textens hur och varför.
Varje redaktionsmöte har en underrubrik specifik för den lokala konstscenen och för de aktörer som medverkat i planeringen av symposiet. För dessa redogörs kort nedan:
15 mars: Malmö, Inkonst (Cancelled due to covid-19)
Lokala redaktörer: Christine Antaya och Matthew Rana
Fokus: Mötet vid Inkonst är det första av de tre av vårens redaktionsmöte, där fokus sätts på kritik både som en omsorgspraktik och som ett kollektivt projekt. Vad är omsorg (i ett konstsammanhang), vilka ger omsorg, om vilka mottar det? Hur kan konstkritik bidra till konstlivet och förbättra villkoren för kulturarbetare? Kan vi kollektivt etablera gemensamma kriterier och värden? Vad berättar vi som kritiker, och vilka berättelser blir hörda? Detta är några av de frågor som vi hoppas kunna diskutera under symposiet. Fokus sätts även på geopolitiska gränssnitt – både de mellan Malmö och Köpenhamn, men även de materiella och identitetsmässiga skiljelinjer som präglar vårt arbete och våra liv i historia, samtid och framtid. Hur påverkar dessa förhållanden vad vi skriver, och vem som gör det? Mötet hålls på Inkonst i samverkan med Inter Art Center (IAC), i samverkan med Signal - Center för samtidskonst, podcasten Critical Dialogues (Christine Antaya och Matthew Rana).

21 mars: Göteborg, Urban Konst, Göteborgs konsthall
Lokal redaktör: Frida Sandström. Lokala curatorer: Patrik Haggren och Daniel Terres, Urban Konst, Göteborgs Konsthall
Fokus: I Göteborg ingår redaktionsmötet i Urban Konsts programpunkt ”För en samtida kritik av konsten” där kritiken utforskas mellan det urbana fältet och samtidskonsten, mellan periferi och centrum, som ett sätt att etablera egna kriterier för att bedöma konst snarare än att utgå från institutionernas röster. Genom att experimentera med sin egen form och vara genreöverskridande kan konstkritiken utmana villkoren för konstens skönhet, oberoende och angelägenhet. Fokus sätts också på vidgade skrivande positioner, språk och utbildning. Vem har möjlighet att skriva kritik, i vilka former och på vilka platser? Kan dessa föreställningar förändras, och vilka förutsättningar behöver då tillkomma?

18 april: Stockholm, Mint, ABF
Lokala redaktörer: Emily Fahlén och Asrin Haidari (Mint, Stockholm)
Fokus: I samarbete med konsthallen Mint fokuserar mötet på de materiella förhållanden som konstkritiken både förutsätter och kanske skapar, samt den populism som den idag möter och ibland bebos av. Med utgångspunkt i Mints undersökning av fenomenet ”arbetarkonst” historiskt och idag, undersöks här om det finns någon arbetarkritik, samt hur den i så fall tar sig uttryck under samtida populism och konservatism. I fokus för mötet står begrepp såsom estetisk autonomi, arbete, och den redaktionella självorganiseringens historia och samtid.

Editorial meeting – A Gathering Towards a Critique of the Contemporary
When publishing spaces are becoming more restricted in favor of ideological and market-driven communication – there is an urgent need for expanding critical conversations and formats. Under the headline “Editorial meeting”, Paletten Art Journal organises two public symposiums during the spring 2020 in Malmö and in Stockholm, and contributes to one in Gothenburg. These gatherings do not only intend to present and comment, but also actively discuss, determine and propose alternative methods for future work. The resulting material will be worked through in collaboration with local editors, and published on Paletten’s website in the fall of 2020.
Art and culture are exposed to immense challenges due to various populistic agendas. This has an immediate effect on contemporary art and its complex habitat between the local, national and international. When publishing spaces are becoming more restricted in favor of ideological and market-driven communication – there is an urgency for expanding critical conversations, formats and languages. With utmost integrity we aspire to modify ways on how to relate to art and the world at large. Through the function of art, aesthetics and the artworld, can we further understand how the development of the democratic nation state that emerged out of modernity – is deeply rooted in colonialism and capitalism?
Under the headline “Editorial meeting”, Paletten Art Journal arranges two public symposiums in Malmö and in Stockholm. In Gothenburg the editorial meeting collaborates with Urban Konst in relation to the event “Towards a contemporary critique of art” held at Göteborgs Konsthall. Besides presenting and commenting on means of expression, the gatherings will also function as a platform to discuss, determine and plan forthcoming work. In relation to the panel discussions, we thus stress the importance of the public voice for the editorial work that will follow during the symposiums, whereas a number of critical texts will be processed for the upcoming publication on Paletten’s website in the fall 2020. What occurs during the editorial meeting, in terms of priority, topics and potential writers, is thus crucial regarding the content for coming publications.
The editorial conversation will be led by local editors for each specific meeting. In collaboration with Paletten, these editors have invited a number of speakers to the symposiums. For each event the local editors will conduct and moderate the editorial conversation, and together with the contributors the idea of the meetings is to assemble material collectively for forthcoming issues. The editorial material will be part of a larger venture situated on Paletten’s website which attempts to examine practical possibilities of art criticism today. By expanding the infrastructure to a recurrent online-publication, we wish to investigate the methodological means and formats of art criticism, and hence establish and contribute with perspectives that not only scrutinize art but also alter ways of encountering art. We will do this by critically examining, within and around text, the material preconditions on how to view and write about art. Similar to workers’ art and its socio-economic and context critical methodologies; what infrastructures does the writer with their text maintain, change or create – and how does this relate to the social encounter with art itself? We want to expand the language and methods of the field, with an emphasis on what is being rewritten is as crucial as the text’s how and why.
Each editorial meeting has a subtitle regarding each specific local art scene as well as for the contributors taking part. The contributors follow below:

Focus: The meeting at Inkonst will be the first out three meetings during the spring, with a special focus on criticism as care and collective project. What is care (in the context of art), who provides care and who receives it? How can art criticism contribute to the improvement of cultural workers’ conditions? Can we collectively establish joint criterias and values? What do we as critics tell and share, and what stories are being heard? These are some of the questions that will be discussed during the symposium. Additionally, a focus on the geopolitical interface – both between Malmö and Copenhagen as well as the material and identitarian divisions that characterise our work and our lives in past, present and future. How do these relationships impact the textual content and the writers who produce it?The meeting is held at Inkonst in collaboration with Inter Art Center (IAC), Signal - Center for contemporary art, and the podcast series Critical Dialogues (Christine Antaya and Matthew Rana).

Focus: The editorial meeting in Gothenburg is included in Urban Konst’s program “Towards a contemporary critique of art”, where criticism examines the urban field and contemporary art, between centers and peripheries, as a way to establish own criterias on how to evaluate art rather than departing from institutional hegemonies. By experimenting with its own form, art criticism has the ability to be genre exceeding and to challenge conditions embedded in art in terms of beauty, autonomy and urgency. There will also be a focus on expanding writing positions, language and education. Who has the possibility to write critique, in what forms and what places? Can these notions change, and if so, what presumptions need to be applied?

Local editors: Emily Fahlén and Asrin Haidari (Mint, Stockholm)
Focus: In collaboration with art space Mint, the editorial meeting will focus on material relationships that art criticism both presupposes and perhaps create, including populistic notions that criticism meets and inhabits today. By departing from Mint’s investigation of the phenomenon “workers’ art”, historically and today, the meeting will further examine if there exists a workers’ critique, and if so, how it takes shape in contemporary populistic and conservative environments. The focus of the meeting departs from notions such as aesthetic autonomy, labor, and the editorial self-organisation’s history and contemporaneity.
